Lake Natron is a unique salt lake situated in the north Ngorongoro District of Arusha Region in Tanzania, bordering Kenya. It lies within the Gregory Rift, the eastern branch of the East African Rift. Fed primarily by the Southern Ewaso Ng'iro River, the lake is relatively shallow, with a depth of less than three meters (9.8 ft) and varying width depending on its water level.
The chemical composition of the water in Lake Natron is such that it has the ability to calcify the remains of birds and other animals that perish in the lake, essentially turning them into stone before they decompose. Despite this unusual phenomenon, the lake supports a variety of unique flora and fauna including endemic algae, invertebrates, and birds. Additionally, some fish are able to survive in the slightly less salty water along the lake's margins.
Lake Natron serves as a hub for visitors with several campgrounds located nearby. It is also the starting point for those embarking on the challenging climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano in the region.
