Lake Manyara National Park is a stunning protected area located in Tanzania's Arusha and Manyara Regions. It sits gracefully between the peaceful Lake Manyara and the majestic Great Rift Valley. The park is characterized by a narrow strip of land that runs along the western side of the Gregory Rift wall, while the eastern side is bordered by the mesmerizing alkaline waters of Lake Manyara. This national park encompasses only the northwest quadrant of the lake, covering an area of approximately 200 square kilometers (77 square miles). Its unique location, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife make it a must-visit destination in Tanzania.
The alkaline grasslands surrounding the lake are a favorite grazing spot for wildebeest, with their numbers reaching their peak during the dry season but dwindling to smaller resident populations in the wet season. Other herbivores in the park include zebra, bushbuck, waterbuck, impala, Cape buffalo, giraffe, hippopotamus, baboon, warthog, and elephant. Predators in the park include lion, leopard, African wild cat, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, serval, honey badger, African civet, genet species, and various mongoose species. While cheetahs and African golden cats are occasionally spotted here, the true stars of Lake Manyara National Park are the magnificent flamingos and the impressive concentrations of migratory mammals.
The park's rich history dates back to 1957 when it was designated as a game reserve. In 1960, it achieved National Park status, and in 1974, an additional 550 hectares were added to its southern end.
